Layered City

1 square kilometer for 100 000 citizens

The planet Earth is overpopulating and cities are growing into peripheries. Does the growing city absorb the entire planet, or is there a possibility of intense densification of an urban enviroment?

In my work I explore the potential of exact parametric design in architecture and urbanism.
I have created my own algorithm for solving multiple levels of extremely dense urban structures. The potential of this tool is an infinite variety of possibilities based on arbitrary input data that can be easily modified during design process. The tool has the potential of a comprehensive solution – urbanism, functional relationships, communications, distribution of urban functions, sunlight – with the possibility of designing structures and details of construction and facades.

I test the tool on the design of a self-contained urban structure with a population density of over 100,000 inhabitants / km2, while maintaining the individual‘s comfort at a particular location in Singapore.

analysis

I compared different cities with different population density and standard of living.

Layered City Algorithm

I made simple prototype of procedural urban tool in Houdini. It’s automatically measuring the city functions areas and finding the shortest connections between new city levels.
